Nick trimmed the crepe myrtles over the weekend. They really needed it. Much as I am against "crepe murder" there comes a time that those suckers have got to be cut back. This is our first trim in over 2 years. They were as tall as the house & blocked any view of our charming bungalow roofline when they had leaves & flowers... On the other hand - they provided shade and some measure of privacy when we were sitting on the porch.

Brandon rode his trike up and down the sidewalk while Nick cut & I supervised... Laedyn was napping (good girl!)
Brandon also helped out by trying to rake the yard. There were little seed pods everywhere.

As Nick's work progressed he got too warm and took off his sweatshirt. For 20 minutes after that Brandon pestered me about taking off his shirt. In between pleadings, he used a stick to beat on the pile of branches Nick was creating. I don't think this is nearly as nice as the slender gracefully curving branches arched over by the weight of the seed pod bunches. I guess it will fill back in soon enough. In the meantime, the front of the house looks bare. Stark. Stripped. It also reveals how badly the house needs a paint job...
I think the little seed pods are pretty. I took a bunch of pictures. It wasn't all that easy though. There was enough wind to make getting a clear closeup shot rather challenging. Perseverence and patience paid off. I got more than one that turned out nicely.
Our neighbor, Rita, was very pleased to see that we finally got around to trimming the crepe myrtles. Now she's probably wondering when we'll get all the branches out of the yard... This isn't even the whole pile! Nick was only 1/2 done with the first crepe myrtle when I took this picture! There's another pile in the other half of the lawn from the other tree. I guess that's this weekends job - assuming the rain holds off.
